If so, you have a lot of company — and with good reason. Goldens have a well-deserved reputation for being excellent family dogs, which probably explains why they were ranked at number four in the American Kennel Club's latest ranking of the most popular dogs in the U.S.   If you own a golden and want to give something back to the breed that you love, here's your opportunity. The Morris Animal Foundation is looking to enroll golden retrievers in their new Canine Lifetime Health Project (CLHP). The foundation's aim is to enroll up to 3,000 goldens beginning in 2012 for a study that could last 10 to 14 years. The research aims to:   Identify ways in which genetics, environment and diet may affect a dog's risk for cancer Determine risk factors for other major health disorders in golden retrievers Learn how to better prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and other canine diseases Improve the health of future generations of golden retrievers   To become a part of this study, dogs must be healthy, under two years of age at the time of enrollment, and have a three-generation pedigree. Owners must be 18 years of age or older, live in the continental U.S., and be willing to complete a screening questionnaire and arrange an initial veterinary examination for their dogs. Don't enter into the study lightly. If you and your dog are accepted, you will need to:   Agree to participate for the life of the dog Use a veterinarian who agrees to participate in the study (They also have to comply with specific terms to be involved) Complete annual online questionnaires regarding the dog's nutrition, environment, behavior and health Take the dog to the veterinarian for annual examination and sample collection, including blood, urine, feces, hair and toenail clippings When applicable, allow collection of tumor samples for evaluation Be willing to consider a necropsy (the animal equivalent of an autopsy)   Owners are responsible for all costs associated with the annual exam, sample collection, and laboratory test results. Morris Animal Foundation will reimburse you for up to $75 of these costs per year after verification that the exam and sample collection has been completed. You may donate this compensation directly back to Morris Animal Foundation to support the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. If you can participate, please do so. According to the CLHP, cancer is the #1 cause of death in dogs over the age of two, and more than half of all golden retrievers die of the disease. The hope is that this study will identify the genetic, nutritional, and environmental risk factors for cancer and other diseases affecting goldens, and provide valuable information into prevention strategies, early diagnosis, and new treatments for cancer and other dog diseases. Check out the CLHP website for more information a nd to sign up either as an owner or veterinarian. Hopefully, this study (the largest and longest ever undertaken to improve the lives of dogs, according to the CLHP) will prove to be a game-changer. I euthanized an absolutely lovely, seven-year-old golden over the weekend because of liver cancer. The government of British Columbia, Canada has published new regulations governing the handling of sled dogs — a move prompted by a grisly 2010 case in which a tourism company near Whistler killed as many as 100 animals that become "surplus," amid slumping business.

The Sled Dog Code of Practice is a step — a small one, according to critics — toward addressing problems in competitive and entertainment dog sledding that is mostly unseen.

"The problem with this whole issue is these (breeding and training) operations are out of the public eye," said Debra Probert, executive director of the Vancouver Humane Society. "People see the dogs in public, but they don’t see what goes on behind the scenes."

Marye Byrd took in an abandoned beagle with fleas, worms, tick bites and other wounds about two years ago.
She and her husband, Dennis “Sarge” Byrd, restored Little Byrd’s health and put her up for adoption. But then a grass allergy caused the dog to lose fur.
“People didn’t want a dog that had medical issues,” said Marye Byrd, 40.
So they kept Little Byrd.
In fact, the family had 20 cats and seven dogs—all rescues—until a fire destroyed their home in Spotsylvania County on Saturday. All but two cats perished in the fire.

A small breed dog runs across the yard chasing a tossed ball. In mid-stride, he yelps in pain and pulls his left hind leg off of the ground. After a second, he continues limping on in three-legged fashion. After ten minutes, the rear leg drops back down to the ground and he uses it normally. This episode occurs maybe once a week. It never really seems to bother him that much – a yip of pain, a short period of lameness, and in a few minutes he is back to his old self. Typically, he is a small or toy breed such as a Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Poodle, or Boston Bull.

A luxating patella may affect some animals much more severely. They may hold the leg up for several days and show considerable discomfort. Dogs who have a luxating patella on both hind legs may change their entire posture, dropping their hindquarters and holding the rear legs farther out from the body as they walk. Those most severely affected may not even use their rear legs, walking by balancing themselves on their front legs like a circus act, holding their hindquarters completely off the ground.

Hurricane Irene

Ok below is a blog I started on Aug 27th the day that Irene decided to throw a tantrum all up the east coast states. I had planned on blogging through the whole storm. However she decided that Us humans were too damn bright. That she turned off our power. I am happy to say that everyone I know & love made it through the storm. Some of us had an impromptu camping trip. Some a lot longer than others, but all still had our lives & the roof over our heads. Well enjoy the read.

Well it is 6pm not here in Olde VA. The wind is howling around the house. Around 1pm the power flickered off & on, then at 5 it just went out. Of course the pups want to go out side and play in this mess. I normally would let them run around a little in the fenced in back yard. However i am worried that this tree in my next-door neighbor is going to come crashing down. It's an old tree that looks pretty weak. The way the wind is blowing my backyard and house or in it's path. Around 1 there was a tree two houses over that went down. It landed in the backyard of my next-door neighbors yard. It took down a bunch of cables & landed on their house. It also happens to be the yard with the tree that I'm worried about. I don't want the tree to cone down on the pups or break the fence and let the kids in the yard with the down cables. So we are just sitting (all 3 of us) watching the storm out the front window.
